How much is  "a lot of time"? My experience is more than 10 minutes in
bad conditions (street with high buildings around); in the same
situation the external receiver takes 2 or 3 minutes.

I tested the same n810 withe the two receivers, so my feeling is quite
the opposite.

I have to say, anyway,  that in good conditions (when mounted on a
car, with a good portion of the sky visible) the built-in receeiver
performs well, time to first fix is reasonable, and it seems very
reliable

Yes, this is expected. Even disactivating the GPS and reactivating it
quickly gives a good response.
