I always setup a user password, edit the 'gainroot' script, and lock the root account using 'passwd -l' The maemo wiki explains how to edit the gainroot script, or you can just install the becomeroot package. I don't think either of the passwords should prevent application manager from working.

Changing the hostname does it. I just changed my hostname and that broke it. It broke a few other things, too (in xterm, sudo gainroot complains GET_BY_HOSTNAME() failed) My original hostname was NOKIA-N800-51. Change yours back to that and it should work again. --Paul On 2/19/07, Francesc
