I have been able to pair my Freedom Universal Keyboard with HID using
BT-Plugin receiving notification "Device successfully paired", but when I
try to connect it appears to time out and I get "Bluetooth connection
failed".
Is there a special sequence I need to do to connect?

Opera does it from time to time, yes. You might enable swap and go
along. Or use links as browser, even better.
I run OS 2006 version 3.2006.49-2 and maemo-bt-plugin 0.6.1.
The plugin succeeds connecting to my Stowaway keyboard, but
as soon as I open an application that expects text input
(where normally the onscreen keyboard would show up), the
devices crashes and reboots.
Am I doing something wrong? Any
