It most definitely does not have the same UI.
I do not have answers to your other questions, though.

There are two main GSM operators in U.S: T-Mobile and AT&T. They use
different bands for 3G. N900 can connect with 3G when in T-Mobile network
but not when in AT&T network.
You can find the bands used by the two operators on these wikipedia pages

http://en.
There are some (one?) hacks around, which seem to make N900 sort of USB host
mode device (I do not know how they exactly work), although officially the
device does not support that (as expressed by Gil Quim).

N900 has been available in certain countries since Nov-Dec 2009. Not for a
year, but more than the 2 months your posting suggests.

You should use Application manager on your N900 device to install the
ussd-widget.
As the widget is located in the extras-devel repository, read the
warnings on this page first and then activate the repository on your
device (the last section of this page)

1) AFAIK, no setting for this (unless someone creates a small app to allow
addressbook editing with more options :-).
If you import contacts with formatting (dashes and stuff), the formatting is
preserved. You cannot write dashes in the phone number fields though...

Instead of resetting the whole counters, the widget could store the current

I still had problems with installing this though App Manager (it was

I could be wrong, but isn't that "Nokia-N900-42-11" your device's network
