If I understood correctly, that is exactly what the backports should
provide, new versions of programs when possible (no update of half of the
core system libraries).

such big projects (especially the DEs) think it would
be too hard to backports newer versions to the 8-10 months old stack of the
latest stable release (as I have seen recently such discussions on KDE MLs),
then I would prefer proposal #2 to not be lacking behind too much.

Can't help you on the packaging, but I will test when you have something
packaged.

could eventually be split between "must have" hardware (network,
maybe some RAID controller?) and "nice to have hardware" (anything that can
be configured after install).
Maybe it is too late in the development cycle of the first release to have
such a change in the installer.

I won't comment on maven as I don't know how it works (the last time I tried
to build from source a program using maven I did not find what options I was
supposed to give to the mvn command to have it built).

What do you think?

Thank you, I will review it (from a beginner POV) once you have something.

So the base package containing the jars can be noarch, and only the optional
*-gcj package is arch specific and requires gcj.
And, as many java programs simply won't work with gcj, those optional
packages would only be provided for programs/libraries that actually work
with gcj.

in common.
So if you accept only one package per bug report, it may be harder to find
the actual cause, as those two apps may be maintained by different people,
each investigating the problem for his own app.

The project would only have a "testing" and "release" (or another name to
avoid confusion with other "release" repos which are frozen), this way you
could quickly have new versions of all the games, if they don't need
bleeding-edge libraries (I think they rarely does).

t backports_testing.
If I remember correctly, there is currently (mdv2010.1 and previous) no
testing stage for backported packages, and it was proposed during the
discussion one month ago, that it would be good to have also a testing for
backported packages.

if
it makes life easier for people whose countries have restrictive law then
we should go for it.
We should probably have a clear rule to decide what cannot go in core and
should in non-free (that on is pretty clear already) codecs or firmware.
I hope we will soon get to the point where we will actually put packages in
those repositories :-)

awesome is already in mandriva, why wouldn't it be in mageia?
If there is someone willing to package it, he may as well do it in the core
repository (be it main or contrib, or whatever they will be called).

Here is another one: if you outgrow your natural resources, you'll starve.

when an user see a yes/ok choice, he generally interpret it as "yes,
I want to keep on doing what I was doing". (and I know I have done it some
times myself)
In your example, the No/yes should be labelled something like "keep current
version" and "install new version".

And you have the really hard kind, where the same configuration file may be

stored in a few ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma* files.

I don't think urpmi support that, but if rpm can do it, it should not be to
hard to add it to urpmi.

There is a webkit kpart which can be used instead of the standard khtml one.
In mdv2010.1 it is provided by package webkitkde.
I think I read somewhere that it was greatly improved in KDE 4.5 (or was it
during a summer of code after KDE 4.5 release?) with better KDE integration.
