You tried to create an alias but either the rights were not setup
properly for accessing the file /var/mailman/data/aliases or your mta is
not Postfix.
As a general rule, you should run /var/mailman/bin/check_perms - though
this file does not always catch the proper rights necessary to for the

Dude! When installing from source, don't put the source files into your
target directory. Put them in your home directory or in
/usr/src/mailman. When you run the install from there, it will create
the directories it needs.
Once the install is done, you need to run check_perms -f
