The first thing I'd do is take a look at the headers of the bogus confirm
messages.

Have you created the entries in /etc/aliases? Something like:
xyz:"|/var/mailman/mail/wrapper post xyz"
xyz:"|/var/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner xyz"
xyz:"|/var/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd xyz"
You'll have to run newaliases after this.
