W. R. Johnson _Darkness Visible: A Study of Vergil's Aeneid._
Johnson compares Vergil with Homer quite a bit. I can't recall how
much he goes into the subject of heroism. For heroism in homer, try
Nagy _The Best of the Achaians_. The focus is largely Achilles, as I
recall.

And don't forget Clytemnestra's dream of nursing a snake that then
