If you populate the data as a link the properties panel won't render the data
as a hyperlink. Just text.
The recommendation to modify the template files and code behind JavaScript is
the best option. Just make sure to create backups of any files you change!

This is incorrect.
It works, we use it. Keep in mind that valid HTML has anchor tags, you need to
include those also. E.g. A HREF=http://myserver.com/whatever.pdfClick
ME!/A This of course will give you the words Click Me! as a clickable
hyperlink.

You should ldd the MySQL or PostgreSQL FDO provider so to see if it can find
all the libs it needs.
If it doesn't find the required dependent so files, you need to apt-get
install libmysqlclient (I think) and whatever the equivalent one is for
PostgreSQL
