Depends on the number of themes and whether or not you are using a database or a file based-datasource. For a layer that has a lot of themes, I have found that having multiple layers from an exploded theme has MUCH better performance when using MS-SQL as the backend. Martin Morrison Applicatio

The question is basically: X db queries for each exploded layer vs 1 db query for a themed layer with X rules. Theme rules require FDO filter evaluation of each feature (to resolve the matching theme rule used to stylize it) from the root query result. The root query result being a FDO query to th
