Might I suggest FME from Safe Software as an elegant and powerful way to
convert these DWGs. While there is a cost, I believe it is easily justified in
the work effort that can be saved over time.

According the OGR/GDAL site (http://www.gdal.org/ogr/ogr_formats.html) DWG is
supported
(but I would definitely say that Object Data and Link Templates aren't),
although I haven't tried the OGR for DWG yet.
