2005 does not have the ability to store geometry/geography objects (you can
store xy fields though). In my OPINION, you should upgrade to SQL server 2008
so you can store the geometry and the data in the same database.

Joining a SHP file to a SQL database is a slow CPU-intensive way to display a
map. It would be far better to either rmove all of the data to SQL Spatial or
to populate the SHP file with the values needed...
