slopes of the eight triangle faces that are formed from the surrounding
nodes. The average is taken so that the resulting slope value is not overly
influenced by "flyers" in the dataset. I hope this helps.

Seems to me that VM is incorrect.
In Canada we calculate slope by dividing vertical displacement
by horizontal distance.
