Is there any easy way to set the workspace default color to null meaning logically transparent or set to another color that might be rendered and controlled to be logically transparent? Why? Have you checked if there are new updates for your 8.0? Alternatively, defaulting the back-plane to the identical workspace extent rendered from your own imagery, Google Earth, or Microsoft's Virtual Earth... an on/off switch might be cool?
