I received a couple of responses to my query directly.  Thanks to those who sent
them. . . it was a great help.  Basically the answer was to open the workspace
in a text editor and change the version of MapInfo from 650 to 550.  Once I did
that apparently everything worked fine.  From the responses I received it may
not have worked if I changed something in the workspace which was a feature of
MI 6.5 and not MI 5.5.
