I found answer,
left$(sitename, Instr(1,sitename,"_")-1)
e.g. "Avenue Road _1(426)"
it extracts "Avenue Road"

Right trimming of a field
Dear all,
I have a field containing names along with some numbers e.g. "Avenue Road
_1(426)"
Now, I want to discard everything after "_" and update the same in the new
field / right trim upto "_".
Pls give me a syntax that I can use in mapbasic window.
