Thanks to all those who answered my question. There were several ways of doing
this but the first one that I tried worked and so I used that one ...
Select * from tablename where col_name = any ("W", "P", "S", "H", "R", "C",
"M", "E", "F")

I realise I can select these individually and then append the tables but I was
hoping there would be a quicker way.
