As for
version 8, as a test I selected a single polygon, copied it (ctrl c), panned
away from it and pasted it into cosmetic (ctrl-v). Zoomed straight back
to it. Can't see anything
I talked to tech support about this about 6 or 8 months ago. Apparently
it is just something to live with, not a bug and no
fixes in store. At least for me, it has been this way
for MANY versions. As mentioned previously, I KNOW it will happen
and count on previous view.

I noticed the same thing in 8. It's not really
needed as they already have zoom to selection (current and all views)as a
command. At least an option for auto zooming would be appropriate.
Really a pain in the @#$# when you editting a map for a specific layout, then

That sounds great! Please let the list know when
you've posted the .mbx. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this
issue.
And by the way, I just did a test

It's not just

6.5 does the same
thing as well.
Also, if an object
such as a polyline or polygon extends past the viewable mapper, if you copy/cut
and paste, it zooms to the pasted object.

8.5 has definitely changed the way it Finds a selection. It's critical that Mapinfo provides a choice for the user to either preserve current scale when finding or Zoom to selection when finding. Changing the way it works has screwed many of my
