Alex - The MapBasic help says this -
"Tip: Setting the Workspace property is the first step to using the MIMapGen object. MIMapGen is designed to work in situations where there is a single map window (e.g. when a web page shows a single map). To begin using MIMapGen, set the Workspace property, so that MapInfo loads a workspace -- typically, a workspace that contains a single Map window. Then you will be able to use the other methods and properties to manipulate the Map window". Which sounds like using the MapGen automation model isn't going to help you very much - but you should still be able to get at what you need through standard automation - have an additional object set to be your running instance of MapInfo, set an object to be the MapGen that belongs to it.
