There's a few different options.. CodeWright, MBBuilder, UltraEdit.. I think
UltraEdit's the least expensive route.

I've been using UltraEdit (shareware from
http://www.ultraedit.com) and it's a fantastic alternative editor
to mapbasic's. I have a fairly complete template for it that will
highlight mapbasic code (as well as several other programming
languages) if you want to try it.

I use MBCoder and for a free product, it's very good indeed. only major flaw
is a lack of reliable find and replace tools. But otherwise, strongly
recommended.
On this topic - does anyone know of a mapbasic editor for mac? I would like
to be able to work on scripts on my mac, with a bit of syntax
