Thanks to everyone for their responses!

I did have partial success today - and I emphasize partial!

In Geographic Tracker I got the message "Acquiring fixes using 6 satellites".
It even displayed a long, lat, heading, etc...

BUT...
(there's always one of those)

The round status indicator in Geographic Tracker would only stay green for about
3 seconds, then it would go red for about 6-10 seconds, and back to green again.
While it stayed red, all the readout information would freeze and go grey in Geo
Tracker.

It cycled like this continuously throughout my 30min session out in the field.
I had a completely clear view of the sky (near the coastline) so I can rule out
satellite availability as the cause.

Here's the settings that produced partial results:
--------------------------------------------------
GPS Message Type: NMEA 0183
Baud Rate: 4800
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: None

GPS hardware settings have been set the same.
--------------------------------------------------

The next step is to figure out why Geo Tracker is cycling between red and green
status every few seconds. I managed to get hold of a laptop with Win98 and
produced the same results - so I guess it's not an operating system issue like I
originally thought.

If anyone has anymore info, drop an email!
