Hi Andrew

Open your Excel table in MapInfo and save a copy with a different filename (or 
in a different folder). Close the original table and open the copy. This will 
be editable.

Make your data table mappable (Table>Maintenance>Table structure) and set the 
projection to match the map.

Now add the data table to the map as a layer (Layer Control> Layer - Add) and 
make it editable. You will now have your data table as an empty layer in the 
map. Arrange the two windows side-by-side.

Choose a symbol style, then click a row in the data table. Click the map window 
Title Bar (to make it the active window), click the symbol tool in the Tools 
toolbox and then click on the map to place the symbol.  This row will now have 
a symbol associated with it.

Repeat the process until complete!  The important thing is to select a data row 
FIRST, then add the symbol to the map.

If you want to check for any missed records, you can query the data table, 
using a simple select, with

not obj

as the condition. This will display a browser with any records which do not 
have a symbol.
