Bottlenose Dolphin Research Internships
The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), based at Mote Marine
Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, is the world's longest-running dolphin
research program. The program's goal is to contribute to a better
understanding of the structure and dynamics of populations of small
cetaceans, as well as the natural and anthropogenic factors that impact
them. The SDRP uses an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach in
conducting studies of bottlenose dolphins within Sarasota Bay, Tampa
Bay, Charlotte Harbor, and the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters. For more
information please visit: www.sarasotadolphin.org
We are in the process of selecting applicants for our spring internship
program. We have 2 positions available, which run roughly from April 2nd
to June 15th. Exact start and end dates are somewhat flexible. This
spring internship would provide an opportunity for interns to gain
experience with photo-id methods, data entry, literature review, and GIS
applications in the lab and to help with monthly boat-based photo-id
surveys in Sarasota Bay. Continuation into summer internship positions
is possible, but not guaranteed.
There is no compensation for these internship positions and successful
applicants will be responsible for their living and transportation
expenses during the time of the internship. Mote's intern program can
assist incoming interns with finding suitable housing.
Applicants would ideally have the following qualifications:
*A background or degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology or related field
*Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access
*Knowledge of GIS and its applications a plus, but not required if there is a
willingness to learn
*Some field research experience preferred but not required
*Enthusiasm and willingness to work some long days with the opportunity to
learn lab and field based methods in dolphin research
Interested applicants should address all questions to Kim Bassos-Hull
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and Jason Allen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and submit an
application with academic transcripts and two letters of reference by
March 23 to Andrea Davis at Mote Marine Lab. Internship applications
