Bay Cetology is a Canadian non-profit organization based in Alert Bay,
traditional territory of
the ‘Namgis First Nation and “Home of the Killer Whale”. We enable
conservation and
understanding of cetacean populations that are data deficient or threatened
by climate change
and human development by using various methodologies to conduct field
studies, analyze data,
and communicate findings.

The Photo-ID Data Specialist will support the projects of Bay Cetology.
Specifically, the
successful candidate will be responsible for the functional maintenance of
some of our killer
whale photo-ID datasets and associated tools and databases. These datasets
and databases are relied on by various scientists and students and the
associated tools enable them as well as
naturalists, whale-watchers, and members of the public to keep up to date
with changes to the
demographic structure and status of these populations. The successful
candidate will also be
responsible for communicating effectively with the Executive Director,
collaborators and data
contributors and will help maintain office and field equipment.

This is an office-based position using Mac operating systems in Alert Bay,
BC, Canada with
opportunities for field research. The successful candidate must be Canadian
or permitted to
work in Canada.

Required Skills and Knowledge:
-Excellent communication
-Strong work ethic
-Attention to details in large datasets
-Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
-Coding (C#, .NET, and/or TypeScript, etc.)
-Web application development basics
-Photo editing and management software (Lightroom and/or Photo Mechanic
Plus, Photoshop,
etc.)
-Basic understanding of the biology and ecology of cetaceans in the eastern
North Pacific

Additional Assets:
-Machine (Deep) learning
-PyTorch and TorchServe
-Python programming
-Linux (Ubuntu) server administration
-Docker administration
-Filemaker Pro
-Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro
-Social media (Twitter and Facebook)
-Marine conservation and NGO oriented
-Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (biology, environmental
studies, marine
science, computer science, etc.)

Responsibilities/Duties:
-Support development of and maintain open access database
-Entry of text and image (meta)data into various databases
-Manual recognition of individual killer whales in photo-identification data
-Editing of identification photos as well as aerial and underwater videos
-Upkeep of field and office electronics (drones, cameras, computers, etc.)
-Other related duties as required (data programming, manipulation,
analysis, etc.)

Successful candidates will:
-Have all required skills and knowledge and some additional assets
-Reside in Alert Bay for the duration of the contract
-Excel working independently and in small groups without supervision
-Be in the early career stage
-Demonstrate expertise at recognizing individual whales
-Have strong digital photo metadata manipulation and management skills

Salary:
$16 to $20/hour depending on experience

Work Term:
35 hours/week
Late March to late October 2023, with funding-dependent potential for
extension
