The behavior of the social democratic left in Italy is pretty consistent with 
their past record, dating back to the 1990s when they supported efforts to 
balance the budget so that Italy could qualify for full membership in the 
Eurozone.  And this, in turn, is quite consistent with the behaviors of most 
center-left parties around the world since the ending of the cold war (i.e. New 
Labour in Britain, the Australian Labour Party, the SPD in Germany, and the 
Democrats in the US, etc.).
