Merip on Syria, showing, amongst other things, how the regime's move
to neo-liberal policies led to comprehensive state welfare schemes
being supplanted by patchy schemes based on community and/or religious
identification. Thus neo-liberalism has both encouraged popular
opposition to the regime, and led to the rise of sectarian divisions
amongst the population. It also suggests that whoever wins the civil
war, the problem of sectarianism emerging from this process is almost
certain to remain.
