Lengthy report from here < http://www.merip.org/mero/mero051413 > from Merip on Syria, showing, amongst other things, how the regime's move to neo-liberal policies led to comprehensive state welfare schemes being supplanted by patchy schemes based on community and/or religious identification. Thus neo-liberalism has both encouraged popular opposition to the regime, and led to the rise of sectarian divisions amongst the population. It also suggests that whoever wins the civil war, the problem of sectarianism emerging from this process is almost certain to remain.
