This month marks the centenary of the Labour Party in NZ.  Founded in 1916,
it formed governments 1935-49; 1957-60; 1972-75; 1984-1990; 1999-2008 (we
have three-year terms here, for both national government and local
government).

Although a chunk of early leaders of the LP had a background in militant
trade unionism, the party soon settled down to have no higher aim that the
administration of capitalism.  The early LP also did quite a line in
anti-Chinese racism, something which has stuck with it and it is prominent
even today.
