"Let's keep the pressure up on Australian politicians to force them to
vote for same-sex marriage today. How about mass rallies across
Australia to celebrate the success in Ireland and to call on the
Parliament to amend the Marriage Act so that, in the words of the Irish
amendment to their Constitution, 'marriage may be contracted in
accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex'?"

I think it would be better to demand a referendum.

Look at how in Ireland there are big majorities in the north and south for
gay marriage, but look what happened. In the south, there was a referendum
and now gay marriage will be on the statute books. In the north, it was
left to the ;politicians and gay marriage got voted down, despite a paper
majority in the Northern Assembly.

I give some reasons why the referendum in the south was far, far preferable
to simply pressurising politicians to vote for it. (I also think a
referendum is far more in keeping with socialism from below politics.)
