WL, Don't apologize because this is exactly the kind of discussion I hoped to start: to examine the surface of American politics toward the goal of building a deep, long-range movement in America. I almost called this thread "Toward a Theory of Revolution (fundamental change) in America, but decided on the more general label of "21st Century American-style Socialism." It seems to me that there hasn't been a lot of really good comprehensive work of this kind in several decades, but I admit that I don't a have as close a relationship to the relevant literature as I once did. Nevertheless, fresh attempts are needed to identify the new forces or tendencies for revolution in America, as well as the counter-forces that function to preserve the status quo or worse.
