Thanks for posting this Lou. I was struck in particular by his reference to
the destruction of the British Mandarinate by the Thatcherites.
Interestingly this was played out on television in the comic series Yes
Minister and Yes Prime Minister (1980-88). Not surprisingly they were
Thatcher's favourite programs.

What Thatcher ushered in was of course a craven subservience on the US where
in the celebrated words of the British Ambassador, Christopher Meyer, he was
told to "Get up the arse of the White House and stay there".

This attitude in turn spun off fantasy solutions such as that portrayed in
the execrable Love Actually (2003) where the Prime Minister of Britain
somehow gets the courage to stand up to the American President's sleazy
advances to the Prime Minister's favorite female.

What I wonder has been happeningd in Australia, with the ruling elites? I
know that Australia's sycophancy towards the USA had a similar fantasy
solution in the hugely successful Crocodile Dundee (1986), where the macho
hunter from Down Under lays siege to the effete of New York.

I guess that the necessary sycophancy towards the US became particularly
galling and humiliating for the elites of Britain and Australia during the
time of George W. Bush. Obama's election must have come as a something of a
relief. He at least could finish a sentence.

However all that relief is surely beginning to wear a little thin as the
glister surrounding Obama fades but that is another topic...

regards

Gary
