Sounds like your LaTeX installation is broken. Can you run latex by hand? Is it
the same binary that matplotlib ends up calling?

think TeX Live installs in /usr/texbin on Mac OS X, although it could make
symlinks in /usr/local/bin. Perhaps /usr/texbin/latex is the version you want.
