Oops, Julian. Didn't mean to take this off list. Hopefully an updated
matplotlib will help. (1.2.1 is pretty old. Numerous bug fixes, features,
and improvements have been added.)

Is there a way to put this in my matplotlibrc?
I have tried the obvious choice:
axes.formatter.useoffset : False
but that give the error
