Hi Noah,
1. take a full backup of the original db
2. install the new db, choose "Create instance for recovery "
3. the new database is now in ADMIN state
4. after that, you can recover the old database in the new database

we have the same problem since MAX-DB 7.5.0.x
The only solution is to stop and restart the database.

Hi Etienne,
if you have a backup (complete data) of your database, you can install
sap-db on a
new server and generate a new database instance from the backup
of your old database.
normally this works perfect.
