This is most probably an issue with bash 3.2 which has been fixed in Gentoo recently. However, the used fix breaks compatibility with bash < 3.2 (for file names like "a_0"), but from what I understand Gentoo now uses my hack that keeps compatibility with bash >= 2.05b.
