I cannot see a syntax hightlighting file for Smarty code
in the mc syntax directory. Has this been done yet?
If not, how can I write my own Smarty syntax highlighting
file please?

OK - found it now.
The Syntax file is actually under:
[root@karsites ~]# rpm -ql mc
/etc/mc
/etc/mc/cedit.menu
/etc/mc/edit.indent.rc
/etc/mc/edit.spell.rc
