Yes Rob. Scanning photographs will reduce its life. Better to photograph
the photograph, and preserve it in a master uncompressed digital format
(TIFF) and as a second printed analogic source.
Unless you manage to have cold light scanners, which flatbeds are not.

I was responsible for the digitization project for the National Trust for
Art and Culture. We made like 30,000 files, including different supports
like photo, audio, video, paper. it was a very challenging and rich project
and i would love to share with the group our experience.
