Greetings, CAL SIG -

Proposals for MCN 2007 Conference sessions or workshops will be accepted
from February 5th through March 2nd, so I'm finally sending out notes
from our meeting at the 2006 Conference where we came up with a number
of great ideas.

If this makes sense, let Margaret know if you are interested in working
with MCN colleagues on any of the ideas we brainstormed. She can collect
these responses and somehow connect people who are interested in the
same topic. Margaret's email is mkendrick at sfmoma.org. Of course, please
don't hesitate to come up with your own proposals!

For our between-conferences meeting in SoCal, Diana Folsom reports there
is an opportunity to pair our meeting with a meeting of SoCal museum
educators. Any thoughts on this idea? Please reply to Diana at
folsom at lacma.org.

Best regards,

Margaret Kendrick

MCN CAL SIG Annual Conference Meeting

Friday, November 10, 2006

Pasadena, California

We had a great turn out and a lively informal discussion of ideas for
sessions at the next conference as well as ways we can support each
other between meetings.

SESSION IDEAS:

--History of collections management systems and next steps in their
development

--Managing technology initiatives in house - how to get buy-in from
administration and co-workers

--Museum studies programs - integrating preparation for technology and
mentoring by established information technology professionals

--More sessions on the use of technology for education - what about a
presentation by SFMOMA IET team or staff working on CALISPHERE?

--Pros/cons re: where technology resides within the organizational
structure of museums

--For small museums, ways to maximize collections management systems to
further the educational mission of the institution

--More on integrating collections management systems and digital asset
management systems, for example where does CMS end and DAMS begin?

--Poster session - "Ask the expert" - sponsored by CAL SIG?

SUPPORT IDEAS:

--Where can we go to locate resources on complex issues such as image
management? A basic list on the MCN website?

--In the Members Only section of the MCN website would it be possible to
list members willing to mentor MCN colleagues?

--What about a CAL SIG blog? Perian Sully to contact Rob Lancefield, MCN
SIG liaison.

NEXT MEETING:

--The next CAL SIG meeting takes place in Southern California.

--Diana Folsom, Southern California CAL SIG Co-Chair, will take the lead
in organizing our annual meeting that takes place between conferences.

--Please contact her if you are interested in hosting the meeting at
your institution, if you would like to help organize the meeting, or if
you have suggestions for presentations and/or behind-the-scenes tours.
