Discover Nikkei Web Developer Part-Time, Temporary/ Non-Exempt
An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation?s premier cultural museums. In 2010 the Japanese American National Museum received America?s highest honor for museums, the federal IMLS National Medal. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife. The mission of the Japanese American National Museum, home of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, ?is to promote understanding and appreciation of America?s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Based in the historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support. Discover Nikkei is a community website about Nikkei identity, history and experiences (www.discovernikkei.org). The Web Developer is responsible for the maintenance and technical development of web applications of the Discover Nikkei project at the National Museum. The Web Developer works closely with Web unit and other Museum staff to maintain the Discover Nikkei website: DiscoverNikkei.org, develops technical strategies and plans for Discover Nikkei?s web presence, and finds or develops tools to enhance its day-to-day operations. This is a temporary, part-time (24 hours per week) position with funding for one year (approx. dates October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014). At least 4 years of experience working with the development of dynamic web applications. Knowledge of Japanese American/Nikkei history and culture as well as the knowledge of Japanese, Spanish, and/or Portuguese a plus.* *Ability to use internet-based tools to enhance collaboration with team members and website users. Required: Solid grasp of Python, PHP, SQL, XHTML, CSS, and Javascript. Knowledge of basic graphic design, page layout, and image optimization. Understanding of website architecture, usability issues, and browser peculiarities. Experience using Django or other web frameworks and customizing open-source CMS software such as MediaWiki.
