Digital Imaging Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S): Contribute to the development of a core image
collection to support the curriculum at Smith. Provide support for
campus-wide pedagogical use of images. Oversee daily operations of image
production. Initiate, conduct, and assess imaging instruction. Within
the context of the Imaging Center, works as part of a collaborative team
of Art Department and Educational Technology Services staff. Serve as a
liaison to the College Libraries and Smith College Museum of Art.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Create original cataloging for digital
images covering a range of disciplines in the humanities, social
sciences, and arts adhering to national metadata standards and best
practices; create and maintain authority files using controlled
vocabularies and best practices guidelines; coordinate production
workflow for digital image data migrations and quality control for all
image/data exports to external sources; contribute to development of
enhanced access points in image presentation systems and provide
guidance on metadata display issues; participate in metadata mapping
between local, remote, and personal collections. Supervise and train
student assistants in image research, quality control, and
pre-cataloging.

Provide imaging instruction for faculty, students, and staff, including
use of various image presentation tools and systems in workshops and
tutorial settings; perform image reference service for Imaging Center
patrons and contribute to the enhancement of the reference area and
training tools; collaborate with the Art Department and the College
Libraries in visual/information literacy programs.

Participate in the adoption and implementation of new digital systems
and services; assist in development of strategic long-range plans for
producing, managing, storing, preserving, and delivering digital image
resources; develop related skills (e.g., html, relational databases,
xml); maintain awareness of advances in image cataloging, metadata
standards, and database technology; advocate for campus-wide utilization
of digital resources, and participate in institutional initiatives for
access to digital resources.

Collaborate with faculty to build collections for digital teaching that
reflect current and developing curricular and research needs in assigned
subject areas; monitor developments among licensed content providers;
identify and evaluate images for inclusion in the database; work with
faculty student assistants to develop strategies for acquiring images to
support classroom teaching and/or supplement existing collections using
personal collection building tools. Participate in the work of the
Imaging Center through service on college-wide and Five College
committees. Take part in other professional activities, and keep current
with emerging practices, methodologies, and technologies. Perform
related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Master?s degree in the visual arts or library
and information science preferred.
Bachelor?s degree plus three years relevant experience, or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of imaging applications, metadata
standards, and best practices; awareness of new technology and trends
and their application for imaging services; ability to take initiative,
solve problems and prioritize work effectively; general knowledge of the
visual arts and image collection management; reading knowledge of one
language in addition to English; excellent oral and written
communication skills; Demonstrated ability to work flexibly,
independently and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty and students
in a rapidly changing service-oriented environment.
