Thought i'd un-lurk at last seeing as i might be able to answer this
question.  A friend of mine had the same problem with his 702 - at full
volume you could *just* about hear the music. Anyway, he sent it back to
Sharp as it was within the guarantee period and they fixed it and returned
it fairly quickly (there's details on how to return it in the box it came
in). We guessed it was some kind of internal amplifier that had failed - so
far i've been lucky with my own 702 which i've had since April, so perhaps
not *all* of these units develop faults :-).
And, to add to the soundcard debate, i've just got the new SB Live Platinum,
and its a great card. Those of you in America may wish to get one from
Europe since european models come with a Live!Drive 2 (front panel which
goes in 5 1/4" bay) which has optical in/out, whereas american models come
with a Live!Drive 1 which lacks these connectors.  Funnily enough it also
comes with the longest Toslink cable i've ever seen, rather negating the
need to have front panel access to optical connectors.
