There has been a lot of traffic on this list lately about whether Best Buy will or
will not continue supporting the MD format. I previously worked at Best Buy for
four-and-a-half years, and I must say I am disappointed at the company's stance on MD
technology in general. And now, Sony has taken the first steps to kill of the MiniDisc
in North America altogether: the RCD-W1, a dual-deck CD Recorder.

For years, Sony has vehemently denied entering the CD-R market, instead supporting
their proprietary MD products. But at the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Sony
admitted to caving in to consumer pressure, and showed this home CD Recorder, as well
as a Discman, Car Stereo Head Units and Changers which play MP3s burned onto CD.
The same thing happened back in the 80s with BetaMax and VHS. Funny though - Beta's
still around these days, it's just not being used (or sold) commercially in the United
States.
