Somwhere out there is a page that describes SCMS, what it is and why we have it
at all.

*all* "home" digital recording equipment is supposed to have SCMS enabled.

By "definition", "pro" equipment is allowed to have SCMS "defeat" modes.

What many people do not realize is that pro equipment isnt that much more than
home equipment (in some cases). Here in the US, a "CD-R" for home use runs about
$500 and pro CD-R machines start at $700 or so.

Pro MD machines are another story...
There are three brands of "pro" MD machines that I am aware of
  Denon
  Sony
  Tascam

I happen to have the Dennon 2300R dual unit. I can defeat the SCMS as necessary
(havent done it becuase I have pro CD-R stuff as well why worry?)
The lowest prices I have seen for a "pro" grade MD is *above* $600
  - Sony MDSE11 (neat 1U rack mount unit)
  - Tascam MD301 (I think it now has a keyboard input for titling)
I think you *might* get a "demo/floor" model Denon M2000R unit for about the
same price (it has "pitch control" for DJ use)

Note that the cost of a "defeat box" and a "nice" MD record
unit is getting durned close to "pro" type equipment
(which has neato stuff like remote start capabiliy)
