David, the MZ-R500 sounds like a good option, especially at that price.  The
other companies just don't seem to have jumped into MDLP machines with the
range Sony has ... at least yet.

The one thing I would consider is: are you likely to want to do any live
recording with the MD? My understanding is that the R500 doesn't have a
microphone input, so it's designed strictly for recording CDs and stuff from
other audio components.  

I use my MD gear mostly for recording CDs, old tapes & vinyl, and other MDs
too, but I have a Sony microphone from the package that came with an old
cassette recording walkman, and the occasional recording of some live sets
and even just some times with my pals has been a really good spin-off from
having MD.
