Sejak 2 atau 3 tahun terakhir ini memang sewa rumah di Qatar telah melambung
begitu tinggi hingga 100%. Flat 3 kamar awal awal adalah US$.500/bulan
sekarang telah menjadi US$.1000/bulan. Villa yang dulunya hanya
USD.1500/bulan telah melambung menjadi US$.3000/bulan.

perbulan. Dan untuk Villa adalah US$.2500 hingga US$.3000 per bulan.

INFLATION in Qatar stood at a record high of 8.8% in 2005, Planning Council
figures show.
The rise was mainly attributed to the huge increase in house rents though
the depreciation in the value of dollar, to which the riyal is pegged, was
also a contributing factor.
The index weighing against rent, fuel and energy had gone up by a huge 26.2%
last year compared to 16.2% in 2004.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) weighted on household consumption and which
determines inflation stood at 6.8% in 2004, a Doha-based economist told Gulf
Times yesterday.
Till about two years ago, Qatar's inflation rate hovered around 2%, he
pointed out. Based on government's directives Qatar Central Bank (QCB) used
to take measures aimed at containing inflation. And the average inflation in
Qatar in the five-year period up to 2003 was only 1.6%.
But with the economy expanding rapidly and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
projected to grow by over 27% this year, there ought to be some inflationary
pressure, the analyst said.
Besides spiralling rent, the last year's revision in fuel price (by as much
as 14.3% for super petrol in the local retail market) had also pushed up
inflation.
The rocketing fuel price in the international market had already made
consumer goods dearer. The freight rates have gone up due to fuel surcharge
being imposed by various airlines.
A majority of consumer goods are being imported to Qatar.
"Qatar's price control mechanism cannot insulate essential items from
inflation caused due to external factors such as international fuel price,"
he pointed out.
According to the Planning Council the average index weighing against food,
beverages and tobacco stood at 107.48 in 2005, up 3.1% on 2004. The index on
medicare and medical services was at 103.34 last year, up 4.4% on 2004. The
index on furniture, textiles and home appliances shot up to 106.45 in 2005,
up 4.4% on the previous year.
The transport and communication expenses had also gone up last year, as
reflected on the index weighing against them. The index concerned stood at
99.71, up 3.9% on 2004.
Interestingly, there seems to be some consolation for consumers as the index
weighted against garments and footwear had come down last year, to 101.81
from 104.60. This implies the prices of garments and footwear were less last
year compared to 2004.
Nevertheless, bitter complaints about rent rise, which in some cases are
illogical, are widespread. A majority of the Doha residents were adversely
affected by rent hike, often 30% to 40% and in some cases up to 100%.
But the situation promises to change with the recent decree that puts a 10%
cap on annual rent increase. The decree will be in effect for the next two
years.
