App Store Will Increase Competition in Mac Software

Among Apple's new product announcements on Wednesday, which included
updates to the company's Mac OS X operating system and iLife suite,
one product probably sent a chill down the spine of a few software
companies: the new Mac App Store.

The store is a photocopy of the App Store currently used for the iOS
platform, which makes it simple for iPad, iPhone and iPod customers
to download apps to their devices. An entire transaction can happen
in seconds.

Now Apple is bringing this same system to its computers, letting Mac
owners buy software with a few clicks of the mouse, without having to
navigate the clutter of traditional software installations with their
DVDs and licensing keys.

This might seem like a benefit for traditional software developers
like Adobe and Microsoft, but in reality, it will put them up against
a whole new range of competitors that can distribute desktop software
in a way that consumers are now familiar with.
