SAMSON, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in Alabama say a gunman who killed ten
people across two rural counties started with his mother, setting her on
fire at her home.

In addition to McLendon's mother, the dead include four other relatives
and the wife and child of a local sheriff's deputy.

The shooting is believed to be the worst mass killing by a single gunman
in Alabama's history. Grieving residents fear the answer to the
question, "why," could have been lost when Michael McLendon took his own
life.

Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers says McLendon "cleaned his family
out," but authorities "don't know what triggered it."

McLendon killed himself at a local plant where he once worked in a
mostly rural area near the Florida border.

After getting a look at the ammunition he was carrying, investigators
say they believe he had intended to kill people at the plant.
