Review: iPhone 3GS

Introduction

Launched on June 19, the iPhone 3GS is Apple's follow-on to the
phenomenally successful iPhone 3G. Exemplifying the philosophy "if it
ain't broke, don't fix it", the 3GS looks exactly like the 3G, except
for tiny text on the back that is chrome instead of grey. All the
substantive changes are inside - the new model is much faster, has a
better camera and more storage, and brings new features such as video
recording, an electronic compass, voice control and VoiceOver
assistive technologies.

The extra speed, in particular, is needed. The tens of thousands of
apps in Apple's iTunes Store have been pushing the limits of the
iPhone's processor and memory, as have rich "Web 2.0" applications.
Apple claims the iPhone 3GS is "up to twice as fast" as the iPhone
3G. Our initial experiences bear out the speed claims, and there's a
next-generation processor under the 3GS's hood, with new video
hardware and double the RAM offered by its predecessor.

The 3GS is a big step up from previous iPhones, but iPhone OS 3.0
software, released just before the 3GS shipped, gives old iPhones a
big boost in functionality too, at no extra cost. And an iPhone 3G
now costs just $99, half as much as a 3GS.
