but I'd prefer it would let me completely delete the log entry from the RC

I downloaded the file site from mediawiki site and I have verified that the
file does exist.

How did you get mediawiki?
Distro packages tend to give problems. Install from www.mediawiki.org

the database error is maked by the CheckUser extension. To solve the problem
do this:
1. run with in a commando prompt "php install.php" in the dir of the
CheckUser extension(normally /extensions/CheckUser)
2. See
