I ended up using Dynamic Article List in my implementation -
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Dynamic_Article_List. Works
quite well for now.

Hello !
Is there an extension available that could randomly show a few lines
of an article on the main page ? The article that is shown would
change with every visit. Of course having the ability to highlight
only "new" articles or articles within a specific category would be a
bonus.

Reporting back to the group. I did not have $wgEmailAuthentication =
true. Once i added it, everything worked as per plan.
