Your local truck MercedesBenz engine shop (combined with Detroit Diesel) might
have the plate to pressure test the head. Call them.

Usual cause is a blown head gasket oil passage between #1 and the
chain case -- enough oil in there, it hydrolocks and bends #1. Not
fun, and my brother just escaped this fate recently when an exhaust
stud broke and we ended up taking the head off his SDL to fix it --
oil leaking into #1.
Evaporator tempurature sensor? It unplugs from the main loom remove
from the sensor, which fits into the box itself. The plug fits into
a clip on the side of the box, you have to unclip to remove. The
sensor is in a plastic holder that snaps into the side of the heater

First, my brother decided to fix the AC on his SDL for a trip AFTER
scheduling hand surgery on Thursday, so I spent the weekend pulling
the compressor off my wrecked 300D and installing it on his car.

Probably a bad glow plug or two, in spite of normal current flow.
Try glowing an extra ten seconds or so, if it's smoother, replace the
glow plugs.
Also, does it thump on shutoff? If so, replace the engine mounts --
roughness, a bit of white smoke, and some clatter is normal on a 603

One point... The Mercedes-Benz Emergency Road Service Number will
arrange for tow, but not pay for it. It covers fuel, tire change,
jump start and battery replacement (you pay for battery, but no labor
charge)..
