Usual cause is a blown head gasket oil passage between #1 and the chain case -- enough oil in there, it hydrolocks and bends #1. Not fun, and my brother just escaped this fate recently when an exhaust stud broke and we ended up taking the head off his SDL to fix it -- oil leaking into #1.
